First Time at a Connecticut Dispensary: What to Expect
Walking into a cannabis dispensary for the first time can feel a little unfamiliar. Maybe you're not sure what to bring, how ordering works, or whether you need to know the difference between indica and sativa before you walk through the door. That's completely normal — every single one of our customers had a first visit.
The whole point of Hi! People is to make that experience comfortable. You don't need to know anything about cannabis to walk in. That's what our budtenders are here for. They'll walk you through the entire process, answer every question, and help you find exactly what you're looking for — no judgment, no pressure, no cannabis vocabulary required.
Here's everything you need to know before your first visit to a Connecticut dispensary.
What You Need to Bring
- A valid government-issued photo ID proving you're 21 or older — driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID all work
- Cash or a debit card — most Connecticut dispensaries don't accept credit cards due to federal banking restrictions
- That's it. No medical card is needed for adult-use purchases in Connecticut.
What the Store Looks Like
If you're picturing something sketchy or intimidating, think again. Hi! People's dispensaries are bright, clean, and welcoming. When you walk in, you'll see a check-in desk where a greeter verifies your ID. From there, you'll enter the showroom where products are displayed in glass cases at our Bud Bar. You can view products up close, ask questions, and take your time browsing.
We have two locations — our Derby store at 90 Pershing Dr and our Hartford store at 306 Market St. Both are designed to feel more like a specialty shop than anything else.
How Ordering Works
The process is straightforward, whether it's your first time or your fiftieth:
- Check in at the front — show your ID to our greeter
- Browse the menu — you can also browse online at shop.hipeople.com before your visit
- Talk to a budtender — they'll ask what you're looking for (relaxation, energy, pain relief, sleep, something social) and make recommendations
- Choose your products — take as much time as you need
- Pay at the register — and you're done
You can also order online for pickup if you'd rather skip the browsing and grab your order on the go.
How to Talk to a Budtender (Even If You Know Nothing)
You don't need cannabis vocabulary to have a great conversation with a budtender. Just describe what you want to feel or what situation you're shopping for. Here are some things that are perfectly fine to say:
- "I've never tried cannabis before."
- "I want something mild."
- "I'm looking for something to help me relax after work."
- "I want something social for a dinner party."
- "I used to smoke in college but it's been 15 years."
Our budtenders won't judge you — this is literally their job and they love helping new customers. At our Bud Bar, you can actually see and smell products before buying, which makes the experience even more personal.
How to Read Cannabis Labels in Connecticut
Every product sold at a licensed Connecticut dispensary is lab-tested and clearly labeled. Here's what you'll see on the packaging:
- THC percentage — the primary psychoactive compound. Higher percentages generally mean stronger effects.
- CBD percentage — a non-intoxicating cannabinoid associated with relaxation and wellness benefits
- Strain type — indica (typically relaxing), sativa (typically energizing), or hybrid (a blend of both)
- Terpene profile — the aroma and flavor compounds that contribute to each strain's unique character
- Net weight — the amount of product in the package
All products are tested by independent labs and labeled per Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection requirements.
How Much Can You Buy?
Connecticut allows adults 21 and older to purchase up to 1 ounce (28 grams) of cannabis flower per transaction. For possession limits, you can carry up to 1.5 ounces on your person in public and store up to 5 ounces in a locked container at home. For the full breakdown, check out our Connecticut cannabis possession guide.
Payment at a Connecticut Dispensary
